AppleInsider | Apple preps .Mac updates, hundreds of fixes planned for 10.4.3

Over 400 minor fixes expected in 10.4.3

In the meantime, Apple continues to develop the next maintenance release to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, which will pack an abnormal number of bug fixes.

Rumor has it the company just finished work on Mac OS X 10.4.3 build 8F20, which should make its way to developers momentarily.

This latest pre-release build is said to rectify over 400 bugs and incompatibilities in the Tiger operating system. Among them are fixes to Javascript, Dashboard, iPhoto, WebKit, Image Capture, Safari, .Mac, Printing, Sync Services, Graphics, Video, iChat, FireWire, and many others.

Vista to ship with Media Center as Standard » VistaKnowledge.com

Vista to ship with Media Center as Standard » VistaKnowledge.com

This hasn’t yet been confirmed by Microsoft themselves, but an announcement is expected in the near future that will confirm Vista will ship with Media Center as standard. At the present time, Windows XP Media Center is only available with media center PCs (or as OEM software if building your own). Vista will however incorporate all the MCE technology as standard, which should help shift some extra copies and entice more people to upgrade.

Media Center allows your PC to acts as a Personal Video Recorder, Music Centre etc and is designed to run on an external display such as a Television. By incorporating MCE into Vista, it must be assumed that Microsoft have finally found a way for it to be more universal with hardware, rather than having specific requirements as it does at present.

The XBox360 also includes MCE capability, and by incorporating the same capabilities into Vista, it is expected to compliment sales of both platforms.

Building a $1,000 Gaming PC

Building a $1,000 Gaming PC

It has been quite a long time since we last took a look at what kind of system you can build for about $1,000, so that’s what we’re here to do today. Fortunately, thanks to new product introductions from AMD/Intel, NVIDIA, and others, component prices are at their all-time lows – you can build a lot of computer for about $1,000, as we’ll demonstrate to you today.

First things first though, this isn’t an article on how to build your own computer, nor is it a product review or pricing guide. Instead I’m going to walk you through some system components that you may want to consider for your next upgrade, whether you’re going back to school, or you’re hoping to build a faster rig for Battlefield 2 or Quake 4. The prices listed for the components in this article may not be the lowest, but hopefully they’ll steer you in the right direction of what you may expect to pay online. The sources used include PriceWatch and Newegg.com.

Along the way I’ll be opining quite a bit more than normal, with my comments based on previous experiences. Don’t worry, I won’t be getting out of hand, and most of it will be based on the countless hours I’ve spent testing hardware, as well as building systems of my own as well as for friends and family. Of course, it also goes without saying that since this is only a ~$1,000 system, the components used aren’t necessarily the best of breed, I should also warn you in advance that some of my selections may not fit your particular needs, for instance, many PC enthusiasts love ATI’s ALL-IN-WONDER cards due to their unique abilities such as timeshifting and, more recently, FM tuning, while the motherboard I’ve chosen may not provide the overclocking options you’re looking for, or perhaps you need something a little cheaper.

BrowserCam Annual Membership III

BrowserCam Annual Membership III – Fundable

This has been done twice already and this is yet again another copied effort since I missed both group actions. A year long membership at browsercam.com costs $480.00. This gives us 25 user accounts. I am proposing that 25 people throw in $19.20 for their 1/25th share of the membership cost. Once I have raised $479.40 I will purchase the annual membership and setup an account for all the participants. Keep in mind that their daily price for one user is $19.95, which is more than what you will need to pay for a year under this plan — obviously, you can’t beat this deal.

Brilliant Ignorance: 9/11 and a $20 bill

The amazing story of how a $20 bill predicted the 9/11 attacks. Pretty insightful. My prayers are still with the victims, families, and friends of those lost in this horrific tragedy.

Linux Distribution Reviews – SUSE Linux 10.0 Beta 3

Linux Distribution Reviews – SUSE Linux

As Novell released their third beta of openSUSE (SUSE Linux 10.0 Beta 3) today I was anxious to get my hands on it. I’m always excited to see what’s new in SUSE’s world as this distro has been on my personal top 10 list for quite some time.
When SUSE was absorbed by Novell many people were amazed and excited, yet a little concerned about the unknown. What would this giant do to SUSE? It seems like it worked out well for the duo as Novell is now frequently talked about as the number two (enterprise) distro, right behind Red Hat. SUSE has definitely not suffered from this merge although the benefits which they have received are not very obvious (besides the bling).
My goal in this review was to do an installation of a large group of packages and window managers and have a good look around at what the first openSUSE will have to offer upon its final release. There shouldn’t be too many more changes as the release is now in Beta 3, but you never know. Each beta has introduced a few new goodies and this release is no different.

Real World Desk

Real World Desk

Some people visiting my GUI gallery may wonder where the desktop concept
came from. Well before Windows, before the Macintosh, or even before the
Xerox Alto, there was the Realworld(TM) Desk.
What is this curious “real world” of which I speak? It is a world outside
of computers and television. In this world physical objects are used instead
of electronic ones. Yes, such a world exists although it seems it is becoming
less and less common.
These screen shots show a typical desk as they once commonly appeared.
