A Long 3 Weeks

February 17, 2006. It seems so far away.

So why am I excited about February 17th you ask? Well, it is Drew’s birthday. Which is of course a big deal and I will be very happy for him :) However, Drew will have had 28 birthdays at that point, so the other item on my calendar is worth being excited about too.

For those that don’t know, which is probably 99% of people outside of my immediate family, I am a HUGE fan of the ABC soap opera General Hospital.

My mother is a huge fan as well, and she got me started way back in the day. I remember watching General Hospital ever since I could remember- if that makes sense. My parents had this little black and white TV in their room and my Mom and I would watch I Love Lucy and General Hospital.

So, I record General Hospital everyday and my Mom and I watch it together/discuss what we’ve seen if we watch at different times. Normally, we are in agreement on most of the issues and storylines on the show… until now!

As with many soap operas, there is usually a pairing of a man and a woman that seems a bit “odd.” At the moment on General Hospital, this pairing is between Sonny Corinthos (a notorious mob boss, infamous for destroying womens’ lives that he gets involved with, one of the most feared men of the city- Port Charles, rich, a psycho killer is after him after just being acquitted) and Emily Quartermaine (a young medical student, youngest of one of the richest families in town, rape victim, breast cancer survivor, relatively reserved by nature, has been helping with the care of Sonny’s kids).

The character of Sonny is around 40 years old, I believe; Emily is around 23-25 years old. Right away, many fans are angry they are together because of the huge age difference. Emily also happens to be the little sister of Jason, Sonny’s right hand man and mob “enforcer.” As you can imagine, Jason is quite upset that his best friend and sister are trying to start a relationship. That has fans angry too. Sonny’s ex-wife, Carly, has been in a mental institution after having had a nervous breakdown, so Emily offered to help take care of Sonny’s two boys. As you can imagine with that, Carly is against the pairing, eventhough she claims to not want Sonny back. Fans of the Carly and Sonny pairing are angry about this since they would obviously like the two of them together. There are other reasons, I’m sure, that people are against the pairing, but I won’t go into that.

For a while, since mid to late December, it has become apparent that Emily is falling for Sonny (actually, her first dream about him was late November). Emily has been warned by everyone in the town not to get involved with Sonny, yet she has fallen more and more in love with him. Sonny knows that Emily has a bright future ahead of her and doesn’t want her to get hurt- as most women that he is involved with have.

The pair have dinner together at Sonny’s place one night and after a few too many glasses of red wine, Emily tells Sonny that she’s falling in love with him. He tries to resist everything since he doesn’t want to ruin Emily, piss of his best friend/her brother, upset his recently-released-from-a-mental-institution ex-wife, and many others. Sonny tells her that he doesn’t love her, blah blah. Fast forwarding for you…

Emily and Sonny decide to do what they want to do- not what everyone says that they should or shouldn’t do. They go out to dinner, attend the trial of the psycho killer that will come after Sonny, you know- the romantic stuff!

Yesterday (Friday), Sonny has sent a postcard to Emily at work with a picture of this lodge on it and “Be there. 9PM.” Sonny gets there first but is hearing voices in his head of people saying they shouldn’t be together. He leaves the lodge. Emily shows up at the lodge, but Sonny is not there. She hears her brother’s voice in her head saying that she will get hurt and should break things off between her and Sonny. Sonny returns to the lodge just as Emily is putting her jacket on to leave and decides that he owes her an explaination. As Sonny lights a fire, they discuss how they have both been through hell and there are so many things to consider before they take it any further.

Emily, normally quite passive and “goody-good,” puts the moves on Sonny! Not only does she initiate things with a hug and then kiss, she unbuttons his shirt and tells him to “just stop talking” while they are kissing and he’s talking about a restaurant down the street. Now, I have watched 90210, Dawson’s Creek, all of that stuff, and I must say that the scenes between Sonny and Emily in the lodge in front of the fire were HOT! Natalia Livingston, who plays Emily, is incredibly gorgeous and heats things up even more with her moaning during the tender moments. I often try to force Drew into watching GH with me, but these 4 minutes are definitely ones I don’t want him watching! For lack of a better term, the chemistry and scenes between Sonny and Emily today were “boner-inspiring.” very steamy!

So, back to my original point. On February 17th, they are rumored to have sex. The three weeks in between are scheduled to be full of the following: an outbreak that kills several people in town and makes everyone sick, Sonny setting up a “fake” kiss with his ex-wife in order to get Emily to move on, a confrontation between Sonny and Jason where he tells Sonny to choose- Emily or him. So, how we go from almost making sweet love down by the fire to staging fake kisses and hallucinations from an illness that has not yet arrived, is beyond me.

Of course, if the rumor is false and they do not make love on February 17th, then I will be ridiculously upset. There don’t seem to be too many fans that support the two of them together, so there is always the possibility that they will not continue things. If this turns out to be the case, then I will be incredibly angry and will have to boycott the show for a while (maybe 3 or 4 days!). My Mom, on the other hand, will be quite happy as she doesn’t like the two of them together.

So, keep your fingers crossed for February 17th. You wouldn’t want me to be angry when celebrating Drew’s birthday :)

FYI- the guy that comes in at the end with the gun is Jason, Emily’s brother and Sonny’s best friend. He is there looking for the psycho killer that has most likely snuck over to the lodge.

Brokeback Mountain

The following are my opinions - I’m not forcing my views onto you, nor am I looking for a rebuttal on homosexual relationships, the actors in this film, or griping about it getting awards that it shouldn’t have.

I finally watched Brokeback Mountain. It was absolutely amazing. It deserved all of the awards it received at the Golden Globes and will hopefully clean up at the Oscars.

I wish people would get over the whole “eww it’s gay guys” crap- this is 2006. There is literally no sex shown between the two, and if you can’t stomach two guys kissing for a total of less than 5 minutes the entire film then get over it.

This is much more than a “gay cowboy movie.” I believe it to be something most people can relate to that have been in relationships- homosexual or heterosexual. The movie is not about sex, it is about love and the bond between two people. It could have been made between a man and a woman, or even two women.

If you are homophobic, you obviously will not like the film if you can’t look past the fact the it is centered around two men. If you can get past that and think of it as a relationship between two people, then I have little doubt that you won’t enjoy it.

I’m not much of a fan of Heath Ledger, but he was spectacular in this film. I am a huge fan of Jake Gyllenhaal and he was great in this film. Ang Lee did a brilliant job directing this. The writing was superb. The supporting actors and actresses were chosen well.

9.5 outta 10 from me. Bought the soundtrack and love it. Will see the movie again, and will buy the DVD when it comes out. This movie deserves all of the attention and praise that it receives- and more.
